8) Learn to Knit Seed Stitch

Pre-requisite Skills:

  • cast on (CO) and bind off (BO),

  • knit (k) and purl (p)

Expanding Skill:

  • switching between knitting and purling within a row

Introduction:

Seed stitch is one of my favourite stitch patterns you can create using just knitting and purling. I think the texture is both visually and tactilely fun. Seed stitch has lots of little bumps and is very squishy and soft. It makes for great facecloths because the texture is really nice on your face.

You could think of seed stitch as a very miniature checkerboard stitch. Each knit stitch is surrounded on 4 sides by purl stitches and each purl stitch is surrounded by 4 knit stitches. It’s a 1x1 checkerboard.

The trick to seed stitch is doing the opposite type of stitch from the stitch that was in the row before, for example, the knit stitches in row one will become purl stitches in row two.

Seed stitch is reversible and lies flat, making it a great choice for the edges of loose-fitting garments in addition to being a beautiful all-over pattern.
