Pre-requisite Skills:
cast on (CO) and bind off (BO),
knit (k) and purl (p)
Expanding Skills:
switching between knitting and purling within a row,
counting rows
Introduction:
The checkerboard stitch is made by creating alternating squares of stockinette and reverse stockinette stitch. It relies on switching between knitting and purling within a row as you did for the ribbed and pique rib facecloths. However, unlike ribbing, the checkerboard stitch does not compress and is not elastic. It is nearly the same size as stockinette, and can be used to replace stockinette in patterns where you would like more visual texture without changing the size. Unlike stockinette stitch, however, checkerboard stitch lies flat and is reversible.
